Dental Prophylaxis Centre
A brief overview:
Why is prophylaxis (the prevention of diseases in the mouth) so important?
Healthy teeth and gums all your life – with the right prophylaxis, it's a goal everyone can reach. The earlier you start with prophylaxis, the sooner you can avoid interventional procedures by the dentist.
Prophylaxis means:
- The prevention of diseases in the mouth
- The aim is to prevent tooth diseases like tooth decay (caries) or inflammation of the gums from happening in the first place.
- The prophylaxis is personally and individually tailored to your particular needs, depending on what state your mouth is in when you come to us.
- And that's what we build on. That's what we mean by individual prophylaxis.

Let us brush your teeth for you: professional deep cleaning!
Stubborn bacterial plaque and tartar
- are the main cause of caries and periodontitis, and even the most painstaking dental care is sometimes powerless against it. That is why there is professional deep cleaning. It removes all the plaque and tartar as well as bacteria, even in the places in the mouth that are hard to reach. This is an effective way of preventing caries and periodontal disease.
It is far more than just removing tartar.
(Periodontitis: deep-seated inflammation of the gums, also affecting the teeth-supporting tissues and bone)
What is the procedure during your prophylaxis session?

It starts with a thorough examination of your teeth. After that, the tartar on the surface of your teeth, in the spaces between your teeth and in the gingiva pockets in your gums is removed using special instruments. The latter are the places that are hard to reach when brushing your teeth at home. Stains caused by coffee, tea or cigarettes also disappear after the use of special instruments, e.g. a dental abrasive blasting device.
Once the hard tartar has been removed, it's time to tackle the soft plaque. This is done using various hand-held instruments, small brushes and dental floss. As bacteria first form on rough surfaces and in small recesses, the teeth are then polished to make them smooth. After that, the polished surfaces of the teeth are covered with a sealant. That protects the tooth surfaces from acid attacks from the bacteria in your mouth. Finally, our prophylaxis specialist gives you advice on how to take proper care of your teeth at home.
How frequently should prophylaxis treatment be carried out?
Scientific research has shown that 6-month intervals are ideal to complement thorough brushing at home and to keep your teeth and gums healthy. However, depending on the individual risk of disease, intervals of 3 to 4 months may be necessary and advisable.
